The mitochondria are organelles that are considered the powerhouse of the cell; they make energy needed for cellular processes. Mitochondrial dysfunction can contribute to insulin resistance and impaired use of glucose and compromised pancreatic beta-cell function. It will also increase the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) leading to increased inflammation.
